Lucy's Story

We're talkin' about Lucy!

She has recently left us, but here we’ll celebrate her life.  We love her tremendously.

Cancer or Liver Disease

We still don’t know for sure what it was, but it was definitely a serious liver disease.  We were scared of this thing and were fearful of what might happen next.  It took her so fast…

Here is the first Lucy picture we could find...

This picture was taken when we first brought Lucy home from the “pound.”  Yes, she was a pound dog – the Boulder Humane Society to be exact.  I love how the sunlight is hitting her in this photo.  The setting here is our home in Loveland, CO.  Lucy, as we named her, was a very photogenic dog right from the start.

Remembering back on this day is joyful – we knew we’d picked a good one (we always do).  Shawn and I had to go get her on this day because Michelle was sick.  We had to make the hour drive to Boulder to pick her up.  We’d already decided on her a couple days before.  Shawn and I got an early start on the weekend, as I recall; we didn’t want anyone else to get her!

Actually, she's from "The Dakotas"

How we came to have Lucy as part of our lives is an interesting story.  I had been reading the newspaper, The Daily Camera as I recall.  There was a story about some puppies that had been recently brought to the Boulder Humane Society from a puppy mill that had been shut down in one of the Dakotas (Michelle thinks it was S. Dakota, I say it was N. Dakota).

We did not need another dog as we already had two, Timber and Tyson (two Males).  We had lost one of my beloved boys, Simba, just a couple of months before.  So, we really weren’t in the market for another pet.  We still had a teenager in the house, too.  But, as fate would have it, I came across that article…

Michelle and I went to Boulder that evening to see these dogs.  I remember that it was dark as the Humane Society has some outdoor areas where you can take the dogs out and interact with them.  We picked out Lucy right away; Mango (her pound name) was in a large kennel with several other similar dogs (there were no real puppies).  I noticed Lucy, even though she didn’t really notice us at first.  She was so interested in the other dogs around her.  She loved other dogs – she always did for her whole life.  There was a lot of activity with other dogs coming and going with other prospective adopters.  Once we took Mango out to the play area, though, we knew that she was the dog for us.  However, I am ashamed to say that we did look at a couple of others, though.

Michelle had laid down the law – there were to be no more male dogs in the house.  Knowing what was best for me, I went along with this edict.  So, we were exclusively looking for female dogs.  There was another that I liked, a Welsh Corgi named Zilly.  It really was coming down to either Mango or Zilly. Of course, we chose Mango (after all, we had gone to Boulder to “save” one of the poor dogs from the Dakotas”).  Michelle will claim that she made the final decision (and it was her).  She made the wise choice!

Six months – are dramatic changes afoot?

Hello World Here is another entry into my short blog about our pets and our recent loss of Lucy, our special companion.  We call all of your pets special, but this time it was especially true.  Lucy was special to me in a way that I can't quite pin down.   Six...

Others going though similar trauma

I owe the blog an update on how things are going for Michelle and I after living without Lucy for these many (5) months now.  I definitely was thinking of Lucy on the "anniversary" day of the 15th.  I also thought of her on July 15th, which was four months without...

Its been Three Long Months…

Learning to live without our Goose   This is a post about our “Goose.”  She was the best girl, and we miss her deeply – more than anyone could understand. I am about to put down all the memories I have of her here in this giant list.   I want to make sure, for...

Two Months on…

Well, its been two months since our precious Goose has left us.  These two months have been a hell of sorts.  First and foremost because we have lost our Lucy, who was  cruelly taken from us too early.  Then, we have been living through this coronavirus quarantine...

April 1st, and no Goose

Well, I guess it's good that the last month - March - is over! What a terrible month! I hope April will be a better month, but it really isn't shaping up that way. My Goose is still gone.... But, at least the calendar page has turned. April has not historically been a...
